Sometimes what you do is smudgy, other times if you sharpen it you see what you do more clearly, other times it's smudgy, like when you have a blunt tip. Other times you use it for other stuff not related to what you do or what you love, and it starts to blunt, wearing out.
So, as Steve Jobs says "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work".
